Spring Event and the opening of the Joseph Mills Approach Fishing Platform a success!

21st May 2018 Posted in Community News

Bracknell Town Mayor Cllr Mrs Sandra Ingham cut the ribbon to launch ‘The Bracknell Festival’ and to open the new fishing platforms at The Cut, Jocks Lane while enjoying a family day out at the Spring Event on Sunday 20th May 2018.

The fishing platform opened by the Town Mayor are named Joseph Mills Approach after a young soldier of the Royal Berkshire Regiment who lived close to Jocks Lane. Joseph Mills died in action during World War I on 28th November 1917, aged only 36. He was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Mills and husband to Elsie Ladd Mills of Alvescott Cottages, Wokingham Road, Bracknell. The Joseph Mills Approach makes The Cut accessible for all ages and abilities.

“I declare this the start of The Bracknell Festival,” said Bracknell Town Mayor Cllr Mrs Sandra Ingham. “Bracknell Town Council’s environmental services team works hard to maintain high standards of presentation at all our Bracknell parks. We are especially proud of the popularity of Jocks Lane and welcome fishing as a healthy and relaxing sport.” Said Town Mayor Cllr Sandra Ingham.

The Environment Agency delivered young adult fish into the River Cut at Jocks Lane Recreation Ground. Bracknell Town Environment Wardens have been working with The Environment Agency and the Angling Trust to enhance the area. 10 Fishing platforms have been installed at Jocks Lane with wheelchair access to two of these.

The fantastic weather brought over 1500 residents and park users to enjoy the array of activities the Spring Event has to offer from pond dipping, birds of prey, wood turning, to plant sales and miniature railway. Families stayed to enjoy the weather with picnics and made use of the splash pad and children’s play area.
