Bracknell Town Mayor Cllr Sandra Ingham celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Bracknell/Leverkusen Twinning Association with a hosted visit to Leverkusen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, meeting the Lord Mayor Uwe Richrath and Mayor Marewski.
“The weekend was an action packed kaleidoscope of impressions and a chance to spend quality time with local German hosts who shared their homes with us,” said Bracknell Town Mayor Cllr Sandra Ingham. “With Brexit approaching it is important to continue to forge good links with Germany through our local Twinning Association.”
The whirlwind tour included a visit to the Leverkusen Water Tower, Bayer Headquarters, Japanese Gardens and Neulandpark, a converted landfill site which is now a popular landscaped park with a Twinning Square.
The Town Mayor presented the book, “Secret Bracknell” written by Marion Field to Lord Mayor Uwe Richrath at the opening of a fair set in Leverkusen’s popular allotments – “Ruhlach -gardens”. At the German-Finnish midsummer celebration held at Leverkusen’s Wupper Bridge Bracknell Town Mayor Cllr Sandra Ingham met with Mayor Marewski. During the trip Bracknell Town Mayor also met Petra Clemens from the Junges Theatre and Gaby Thanscheidt of the theatre group Young Stage to discuss how best to organise a youth theatre exchange programme with South Hill Park, Bracknell.
Bracknell Twinning Association works with the Freundeskreis in Leverkusen to arrange regular visits to their partner towns and in particular to facilitate exchanges between local interest groups, schools and sports clubs and for work experience. In recent years the bond of friendship between citizens of the twin towns has been re-kindled with an increasing number of exchanges and joint activities.
The Bracknell Twinning Association is run by a committee elected each year at its Annual General Meeting. The Bracknell Twinning Association meetings are held in the Bracknell Town Council Chamber. Any local resident interested in twinning is welcome to make contact and attend the meetings. Various sports and cultural exchanges take place on a regular basis and the committee is always pleased to facilitate other exchanges for clubs or individuals.
The Twinning Association would be pleased to hear from anyone who may be able to offer accommodation to visitors from Leverkusen.
